Saint Ignatius of Loyola Poster
Who was Saint Ignatius of Loyola?
Saint Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491 in the Basque Country of Spain, was the founder of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. Originally a soldier, Ignatius experienced a profound spiritual conversion while recovering from serious battle injuries. His reflections during this period led him to write "Spiritual Exercises," a set of meditations and prayers that outline a rigorous program of spiritual development. These exercises became the foundation for the Jesuit order, which he established in 1540 with the approval of Pope Paul III.
Ignatius's order was dedicated to the service of the Pope, education, and missionary work. His educational model is credited with influencing the development of modern education systems.
Saint Ignatius of Loyola is the patron saint of soldiers, educators, and Catholic soldiers. His feast day is celebrated on July 31st, marking his death in 1556 and celebrating his enduring legacy in education and religious devotion.
