Who was Saint Rita of Cascia?
Saint Rita of Cascia, born Margherita Lotti, is revered as a model of patience and fortitude. Her life was filled with hardship and tragedy, yet she consistently turned to prayer and demonstrated unyielding faith in God. Born in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy, Rita desired to become a nun, but her parents arranged for her to marry, hoping to end a family feud. Her marriage was troubled, and she bore two sons. After her husband was killed, and her sons died, Rita finally achieved her dream of entering the Augustinian convent in Cascia.
She is known for her devotion to the Passion of Christ, and it's said that she bore a stigmata-like wound on her forehead, believed to be received after praying to share in Christ's suffering. Rita was canonized in 1900 and is known as the patron saint of impossible causes, difficult marriages, and lost causes.
