Who was Saint Agatha of Sicily?
Saint Agatha of Sicily is celebrated as a virgin martyr, having died for her faith in 251 AD. She is one of the most highly venerated virgin martyrs of the Catholic Church. Agatha is believed to have been arrested during the persecution of Decius, a Roman Emperor who targeted Christians. Despite enduring torture and imprisonment, she remained a devout Christian, rejecting advances from men due to her commitment to religious purity. She is often depicted in art as a young woman in robes of purity and martyrdom. Her steadfast faith and courage in the face of suffering have inspired many over the centuries. Saint Agatha is the patron saint of Sicily, breast cancer patients, bakers, and earthquakes.
