Who was Saint Gerard Majella?
Saint Gerard Majella, born in 1726 in Muro Lucano, Italy, is widely venerated as the patron saint of expectant mothers, childbirth, and unborn children. His life, though short—he died at the age of 29—was marked by deep piety and miraculous deeds attributed to his intercession. Gerard joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, where he served as a lay brother. He was known for his ascetic practices, profound mystic experiences, and, notably, his compassion towards the poor and suffering.
Gerard's association with expectant mothers and children began after a false accusation by a pregnant woman, which was later recanted, leading to an increase in his reputation for protecting and aiding women through pregnancy and childbirth challenges.
Saint Gerard Majella's feast day is celebrated on October 16th, and he is often invoked by those seeking children, during pregnancy, and for the safe delivery of infants.
