Who was Edmund Campion?
Saint Edmund Campion was a 16th-century English Jesuit priest and martyr, celebrated for his eloquent defense of the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation under Queen Elizabeth I. Born in London in 1540, Campion was a brilliant scholar at Oxford and initially an Anglican deacon. However, his Catholic convictions led him to flee to Douai, France, and later to Rome, where he joined the Jesuit Order. He returned to England undercover, determined to minister to the persecuted Catholics and argue against the Anglican Church's doctrines.
Campion was eventually captured, tortured, and executed at Tyburn in 1581, refusing to renounce his faith. He was canonized in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, who collectively represent Catholic perseverance against religious oppression.
Saint Edmund Campion is the patron saint of the Catholic Press due to his influential writings defending Catholicism. His feast day is celebrated on December 1st, honoring his steadfast faith and martyrdom.
