Who was Saint Blaise?
Saint Blaise, also known as Saint Blasius, was a Christian bishop in Sebastea, Armenia, during the early 4th century. Historically recognized as a healer and physician before his ordination, Blaise is believed to have saved lives both through medicine and miraculous interventions. According to legend, he healed a boy who was choking on a fishbone, which led to one of his most enduring legacies as the patron saint of throat illnesses.
Blaise is revered as the patron saint not only of throat illnesses but also of animals, given his care for and healing of them. His protection is often invoked by wool combers and other professions associated with wool, owing to another legend involving a woman whose pig was miraculously saved from a wolf through his intervention.
His feast day, known as Saint Blaise's Day, is celebrated on February 3rd. On this day, the Blessing of St. Blaise is performed in many churches where two candles, blessed on the previous day, Candlemas, are held in a crossed position over the throats of the faithful to protect them from ailments.
