Who was Saint Robert Bellarmine?

Saint Robert Bellarmine was an influential Italian Jesuit and a cardinal during the Counter-Reformation. Born on October 4, 1542, in Tuscany, Bellarmine became one of the most important figures in the Catholic Church during his time. He was a professor of theology at the Roman College and later became the rector. As a cardinal, he played a crucial role in various Church proceedings, including the trial of Galileo. Bellarmine was a prolific writer; his most famous works are the "Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith," which defended Catholic theological positions against Protestant objections. He was canonized a saint in 1930 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1931. He is the patron saint of catechists and catechumens.
