Who was Saint Anthony of Padua?

Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, is one of the Catholic Church's most popular and revered saints. Originally a member of the Augustinian order, he transferred to the Franciscans inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscans in Morocco. Known for his powerful preaching, profound knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and sick, he was canonized just one year after his death in 1231.

Saint Anthony is commonly known as the patron saint of lost items, a title that originated from a story where a novice who had stolen his valuable psalter was moved to return it after Anthony prayed for its return. He is also the patron of the poor, travelers, and sailors. His feast day is celebrated on June 13th, and it is a day marked by prayers and festivities, especially in Padua, Italy, where he spent the last years of his life and where his relics are enshrined.
