Who was Saint Catherine de' Ricci?

Saint Catherine de' Ricci, born Alessandra Lucrezia Romola de' Ricci in 1522 in Florence, Italy, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church known for her mystical experiences and deep spiritual leadership. She entered the Dominican convent at Pratovecchio at the age of 14 and later moved to the convent of San Vincenzo in Prato, where she spent the majority of her life. Catherine became renowned for her intense experiences of spiritual suffering and ecstasy, which she believed united her with Christ's passion. Remarkably, she exhibited stigmata and reputedly underwent mystical marriages and exchanges of hearts with Christ.

Catherine is venerated as the patron saint of sick people, reflecting her lifelong acts of compassion towards the ill and suffering in her community. Her feast day is celebrated on February 13th. Catherine was canonized in 1746, recognized for her virtuous life and her role as a model of contemplative life within the Church. Her legacy is marked by her writings and the profound impact she had on the religious community and beyond during her lifetime.
