Who was Saint Cecilia?

Saint Cecilia, shown in this illustration, is venerated as the patron saint of musicians and Church music due to her association with music in her life and martyrdom. According to legend, while the musicians played at her wedding, Cecilia sang to the Lord in her heart, pledging her virginity. Her feast day is celebrated on November 22. She is one of the most famous Roman martyrs, and her story has been an inspiration to many artists, poets, and musicians over the centuries. The actual details of her life remain largely unknown, but she is believed to have lived in the 2nd or 3rd century A.D. and is one of the eight women commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.
