Who was Saint Clare?

Saint Clare of Assisi, born Chiara Offreduccio, is a revered saint who embodies the ideals of poverty, humility, and devotion. Born in 1194 in Assisi, Italy, Clare was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi's teachings and left her affluent background to live a life of poverty and piety. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, also known as the Poor Clares, which was based on the Franciscan principle of complete poverty; the nuns of this order live without any property or financial security.

Saint Clare is celebrated for her resilience and leadership. Under her guidance, the Poor Clares flourished, dedicating their lives to prayer and service. She's known for her deep faith, which, according to lore, once saved Assisi from invaders through the power of prayer. She is the patron saint of eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, needleworkers, and telephones.
