Who was Saint Cuthbert?

Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne is remembered as one of the most important medieval saints of Northern England, renowned for his piety and miraculous powers. Born around 634 A.D., he was a monk, hermit, and later a bishop of Lindisfarne, an island off the northeast coast of England. Cuthbert was known for his devotion to preaching, prayer, and solitude, which led him to the hermitage on Inner Farne Island, where he lived in quiet contemplation.

His life was marked by a series of reputed miracles, which contributed to his reputation as a man of God. After his death on March 20, 687, he was quickly venerated as a saint. His remains, initially buried at Lindisfarne, were later moved to Durham Cathedral to escape Viking raids. Saint Cuthbert is often depicted with the Eider ducks, which he protected on the Farne Islands, and they are sometimes called "Cuthbert's ducks."

He is the patron saint of Northumbria, and his feast day is celebrated on March 20th. His legacy endures in the North of England, and he is a symbol of Northern English spirituality and steadfast faith.
