Who was Saint Edith Stein?

Saint Edith Stein, also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was an extraordinary figure whose journey from Jewish philosopher to Catholic nun ended in martyrdom in the Holocaust. Born in 1891 in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland), Edith was an intellectual and early feminist who studied under phenomenologist Edmund Husserl. Despite her academic success, she converted to Catholicism from Judaism in 1922, profoundly moved by the autobiography of St. Teresa of Ávila.

Edith entered the Carmelite convent in 1933, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Her heritage, however, led to her arrest by the Nazis, and she was martyred in Auschwitz in 1942. She was canonized in 1998 and is celebrated as a martyr of the Shoah, the patron saint of Europe, signifying her role in bridging gaps between faiths and her profound intellectual contributions.

Her feast day is celebrated on August 9, commemorating her death and celebrating her life's spiritual and scholarly legacy.
