Who was Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton?

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born American to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Born in 1774 in New York City, she was a wife and mother of five who was widowed by the age of 29. Following her husband's death, Elizabeth converted to Catholicism, facing social and financial ostracism in the process. Undeterred by her hardships, she founded the first free Catholic school in America, laying the groundwork for the Catholic parochial school system in the United States.

Elizabeth also established the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity, which was instrumental in the development of the Catholic healthcare and education systems. She was canonized in 1975 by Pope Paul VI. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is the patron saint of widows, seafarers, and Catholic schools. Her feast day is celebrated on January 4th, marking her role as a pioneering figure in American Catholicism and her enduring legacy in education and charitable works.
