Who was Saint Francis of Assisi?

Saint Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Born in 1181 or 1182 in Assisi, Italy, to a wealthy cloth merchant, he lived a carefree early life before experiencing a spiritual conversion. He renounced his family's wealth and devoted his life to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty.

Francis founded the Franciscan Orders, including the Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare, and the lay Third Order of Saint Francis. He is known for his love of all creatures and the natural world, making him a patron saint of ecologists. Francis's humility and devotion to a simple life were encapsulated in the creation of the first live nativity scene. He was canonized as a saint in 1228, only two years after his death.
