Who was Saint Isaac Jogues?

Saint Isaac Jogues was a French Jesuit priest, missionary, and martyr who, in the 17th century, braved the vast wilderness of North America to preach Christianity to Indigenous peoples. Born in 1607 in Orléans, France, Jogues entered the Jesuit order at the age of seventeen. He was sent to New France, now Canada, as a missionary to the Huron and Iroquois nations. His mission work was fraught with danger, and he was eventually captured by Iroquois warriors, enduring torture and imprisonment before escaping back to France. Remarkably, Jogues chose to return to the mission field, where he was ultimately killed in 1646. He was canonized in 1930 by Pope Pius XI. Saint Isaac Jogues is remembered for his unwavering courage, deep faith, and his dedication to peace and understanding between cultures. He is also considered the patron saint of North America.
