Who was Saint Joan of Arc?

Saint Joan of Arc, also known as the Maid of Orléans, is one of the most celebrated figures in history for her role in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, France, Joan believed she was guided by divine visions of saints instructing her to support Charles VII and reclaim France from English domination. At just 17, she led French troops to several important victories and played a pivotal role in the crowning of Charles VII. Captured by Burgundian allies of the English, she was tried for witchcraft and heresy and was burned at the stake in 1431, at the age of 19.

Joan of Arc is the patron saint of soldiers and France. Her courage, faith, and conviction made her a national heroine of France and a symbol of French unity and nationalism. She was canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. Her feast day is celebrated on May 30th, the anniversary of her martyrdom.
