Who was Saint Joan of Arc?

Saint Joan of Arc, born in Domrémy, France in 1412, is one of the most iconic and revered figures in history. She rose from a peasant girl to become a military leader inspired by visions of saints urging her to fight to liberate France from English control during the Hundred Years' War. Her successes were remarkable, most notably lifting the siege of Orléans, which significantly shifted the momentum to the French. However, her capture by the Burgundians, subsequent sale to the English, and tragic execution at the stake for charges including heresy marked her as a martyr.

Joan was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XV in 1920, nearly 500 years after her death. She is the patron saint of soldiers and France, celebrated for her unyielding courage, deep faith, and nationalistic fervor. Her feast day is observed on May 30th, the date of her execution, serving as a day of remembrance for her life and legacy.
