Who was Saint Kateri Tekakwitha?

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," was the first Native American to be recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, near present-day Auriesville, New York, Kateri was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and a Roman Catholic Algonquin mother. After losing her family to a smallpox epidemic, which also left her visually impaired and scarred, Kateri was baptized at the age of nineteen and vowed to dedicate her life to God.

Known for her virtue and chastity, Kateri's life was marked by a deep devotion to the Eucharist and arduous penance. After her death at the age of 24, witnesses reported miraculous healings associated with her. Kateri was canonized on October 21, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. She is the patron saint of the environment, people in exile, and Native Americans.
