Who was Saint Maximilian Kolbe?

Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Born on January 8, 1894, as Rajmund (or Raymund) Kolbe, he was active in promoting the Immaculate Virgin Mary and founded the Militia Immaculatae (Army of the Immaculate One) movement, dedicated to her. Kolbe also started a monastery in Nagasaki, Japan, and launched several religious publications. His life was a testament to sacrifice and charity, culminating in his final act of love—offering his life for another man's. Kolbe was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982 as a martyr of charity. He is the patron saint of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement, and the chemically dependent.
