Who was Saint Rose of Viterbo?
Saint Rose of Viterbo, born in 1233 in the city of Viterbo, Italy, was known for her robust spirituality and compassion from a very young age. She joined the Secular Franciscan Order and devoted herself to penance and acts of charity. Known for her prophetic gifts and bold preaching in a time of church strife, she was a vociferous advocate for the papacy during the conflict between the Holy See and the Emperor Frederick II.
Rose was remarkable for her commitment to the poor and sick, demonstrating a maturity beyond her years in both her spiritual insights and her charitable acts. Her ministry was characterized by miracles and a crusade for penance in her community. Despite her young age, her missionary zeal and sanctity were such that she became an inspiration to many. She died at only 18, yet her impact was profound.
Saint Rose is the patron saint of people in exile and the city of Viterbo.
